Anxiety: Feeling Out Of Control

Feeling Out Of Control

Anxiety and fear are experienced by everyone. It’s normal to feel anxious like meeting someone new or going to a job interview. However, if worries and fears are getting in the way of living the life you want, then you may be struggling with an anxiety disorder.  There are several types of anxiety disorders. As well, there are many corresponding treatment options and self-help strategies. Once you know what you’re dealing with, then you can take steps to reduce the symptoms and feel more in control.

Defense Mechanisms

Anxiety is a normal reaction to threat. The body’s defense system responses are triggered when you are in danger, under pressure, or are in a stressful situation. These defense mechanisms are there to keep you safe; however, sometimes the defense system gets a bit too sensitive and misinterprets non-threatening cues as dangerous. It is at this point that the overactive defense system becomes problematic, and disorders develop.

What Is An Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety disorders are a group of related conditions, which means that they can manifest differently from person to person. One person may ruminate about the day’s interactions for hours before falling asleep. Someone else may want to travel, but because of a fear of flying, they are unable to discover the world. Another person may fret and worry over everything and nothing all at the same time–never knowing a sense of peace and calm. Someone else may experience panic attacks that come out of nowhere. Regardless of what form the disorder takes, all they all illicit fear that is disproportionate to the situation at hand.

Help Is Available

While having this type of disorder can be all consuming, stopping you from living your life fully, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. These disorders are the most common mental health issue–and are highly responsive to treatment.
